Apple OS 26 Is Here (And Kandji Has You Covered)

September 19, 2025

macos 26

Apple just dropped iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26. For the first time ever, Apple has standardized version numbers across every operating system - no more trying to remember which iOS version goes with which macOS release. We just have to keep things straight that the iPhone 17 Pro Max runs iOS 26 on the A19 Pro processor with the N1 wireless networking chip.

This unified approach isn't just cosmetic. It signals Apple's commitment to a consistent experience across their entire ecosystem, which should make life easier for IT teams managing mixed device environments.

What's Actually New for IT

Beyond the version number alignment, there are some meaningful updates for device management:

  • Default app controls are finally here for iOS and iPadOS. You can now set defaults for web browsing, calling, and messaging apps—and optionally prevent users from changing them.
  • Enhanced Safari restrictions let you disable history clearing and private browsing across platforms, giving organizations better control over browser behavior.
  • Software update management now extends to Apple TV and Vision Pro, with declarative device management handling the heavy lifting on newer platforms.
  • More Setup Assistant controls for Vision Pro and additional privacy settings options across platforms.

Why Day 0 Support Matters

The challenge with major OS releases has always been the gap between when Apple ships and when your MDM is ready to support new features. Users update their devices immediately, but IT teams often have to wait weeks or months for full platform support.

We've eliminated that gap. All existing Kandji functionality works seamlessly on these new operating systems from day one, plus we've added support for the new management capabilities Apple introduced.

What this Means for Your Environment

I predict we're going to see significant movement in the MDM space over the next year. Organizations that have been putting off mobile device migrations they know they should make will finally pull the trigger.

This is particularly relevant for teams managing large iOS deployments who chose their current MDM years ago when their mobile needs were different, or organizations that inherited their platform through acquisitions and never got around to consolidating.

The competitive pressure this creates should ultimately benefit everyone. When switching costs drop, vendors have to compete on actual value rather than migration friction.
